Chicago Cubs: 3 current players to keep and build around
The Chicago Cubs need to evaluate their roster and decide who to keep.
As a punk rock band from London once pondered, “should I stay or should I go?”
That phrase is likely being tossed around in the brains of current Chicago Cubs players and executives alike, as an ESPN article released on Sunday rumored:
“...the Cubs are signaling there will be significant turnover on the roster, with a willingness to move almost any veteran — as well as just about anyone from the core group of position players who won the 2016 World Series, including shortstop Javier Baez.”
Yikes.
Four years ago seems like an eternity at this point, which is saying something for Cubs fans.
That the core of Javier Baez, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo were the headlining heroes of the Cubs team that broke a curse that lingered over the North Side of Chicago for over a century.
Realizing that all of them are now likely on the move is almost incomprehensible.
However, anyone who has watched the majority of Cubs games knew that such a bold strategy was bound to happen, especially after the COVID-shortened season ended at the hands of a Miami Marlins team that the Cubs should have handled.
Clearly, the key to another championship is not running it back again and it is time to rebuild.
While a firesale may commence, there are a few players that the Cubs should consider sticking with as building blocks for the future.
