28. player. 9. . SP. Chicago Cubs. Kyle Hendricks

The Chicago Cubs signed Kyle Hendricks through the 2023 season. He will become an unrestricted free agent over the 2023-24 offseason. His contract isn’t considered an albatross contract because he is insanely good at pitching but it is one of the big contracts on the Cubs right now. If they (somehow) decided to extend Rizzo, Bryant, or Baez those guys would make much more but right now, if the losses are as big as the Cubs suggest, trading Hendricks might help them.

He would also, out of all these guys, net them the biggest return. There is no doubt that despite Darvish’s insane season, that Hendricks is the best pitcher on the staff. He came in 9th for the NL Cy Young this year which is pretty impressive considering some of the elite pitching in the National League right now.

For his production, you would consider his contract to be a team-friendly one if anything. For that reason, teams that see themselves as World Series contenders might really consider doing it. He would be at or near the top on every rotation in all of Major League Baseball. As mentioned before, his contract isn’t as big as the others on the list but it is a significant amount of money to save if you are rebuilding. Returning as many great prospects as you can need to be the biggest thing for a trade involving Hendricks.

There is no guarantee that any of these guys are gone but they are three veterans to consider selling high on if they are serious about rebuilding their roster. Jed Hoyer is probably going to take over for Theo Epstein after he is gone but they will probably work together to get this thing rebuilding on the right track.
