32. player. 9. . SP. Chicago Cubs. Tyler Chatwood

The signing of Tyler Chatwood ahead of the 2018 season seemed smart at the time. They didn’t have quite the rotation that they did after the truly dominant stretch that was 2015-2017 but the parts were there that just needed some supplementing. Chatwood was a project because he has fantastic stuff but his command is terrible. The Cubs, however, were not able to get him to control his pitches better and everyone suffered for the most part.

He was especially bad in 2020 after a decent start. It was the shortened 60 game season but there wasn’t much reason to believe that it would improve over 162 games. He had a negative WAR at -0.1. He had a 5.30 ERA and 1.661 WHIP which are very bad numbers. The Cubs still won the NL Central on the strength of pitching but Chatwood didn’t have much to do with it.

As a free agent, it is fair to assume that the Cubs won’t bring him back. There isn’t much attachment to him as far as a bad trade or great performance so it really won’t matter that much. He will probably still find himself a job with another organization but his time with the Cubs is all but up.

Hot. Could the Chicago Cubs find a way to trade for Lindor?. light

All of these guys are nice men and okay baseball players at this time but none of them are really needed for what the Cubs are doing anymore. They are all probably going to have at least one more job with another team but there is a good chance they are gone by 2021.
