The Chicago Bears should probably not trade Mitchell Trubisky during this season.

The Chicago Bears are a 5-1 football team. A lot of people question their legitimacy but the fact remains that they are a 5-1 team that is looking to make the playoffs. They certainly have a lot fewer flaws than most of the teams in the NFL but amongst the contenders, there are certainly some things to worry about but they have that record that they can build on. If they are going to do anything, having someone like Tyler Bray in there at quarterback probably isn’t smart.

That would be the case if the Bears traded Mitchell Trubisky and then Nick Foles was injured. Nick Foles has done an okay job at getting the offense to look somewhat better following the benching of Trubisky but they still have a long way to go. With that said, Mitch is probably better than any other realistic option that the Bears would have in the case of a Foles injury.

They also probably wouldn’t get much for him at this point. The former second overall pick has been a bust and will likely be off the Bears next year anyway. Nobody is going to pay much draft capital or roster players to receive a below-average quarterback like that. He has much more value to the Bears right now as their backup during this season that they are trying to win than he would on the trade market.

If Trubisky needed to come in for Foles at any point, it would be less than ideal but it would be better than needing to use Bray. It is pretty sad that these are the conversations that we are having right now but that is just the way it is. The defense is too good to not try and take advantage of it while they can. Foles gives them the best opportunity to do that right now but things could change from week to week.

With that said, the Bears so clearly need to upgrade the position in the long term. At 5-1, they certainly aren’t going to be in Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft but they should draft whoever is the best available. Beyond that, they need to evaluate their quarterback room going into 2021 and always try and improve. Either way, having both Trubisky and Foles in the mix for the rest of the season is a smart idea.
