Chicago Blackhawks: Three players to trade during 2020 NHL Draft
The Chicago Blackhawks have had a strange relationship with Andrew Shaw as well. Like Saad, Shaw has been traded away from the Hawks and reacquired. Shaw is in no way, shape, or form as good as Saad but he is an effective player when he plays a certain type of way. At 29 years old, he certainly has a lot to give at the NHL level. A team that is much closer to contending than the Hawks might really find him useful on their third or fourth line.
Shaw had some injury trouble during the 2019-20 season that caused him to only play in 26 games. That is a small number of games, even for the COVID-19 shortened season. He only scored three goals and had seven assists for ten points in those 26 games. It isn’t terrible production for a player of his caliber but he just wasn’t on the ice a whole lot.
He has two years left on his contract at 3.9 million which is a lot for a player like him. This is absolutely a contract that they might want to trade if they can because they can use that money a lot more wisely. With a flat cap set for at least the next couple of years, they are going to need every penny available. Shaw might not get you as much as the previous two players listed but anything will be good along with the cap relief. This will be especially true if they decide to hang on to Dylan Strome.
There is no guarantee that they trade any of these players but the possibility is absolutely there. They already made one trade so far this offseason as they dealt Olli Maatta to the Los Angeles Kings. They need some cap space and might be willing to let one of (if not two) of these three. This is going to be a very exciting draft and hopefully, the Hawks succeed.
