Chicago Bulls Rumors: Trades coming for an immediate retool?
By Ryan Heckman
New Chicago Bulls general manager Marc Eversley hinted at the fact that his team could compete soon.
Going into last season, many Chicago Bulls fans felt this team had the chance to compete for a playoff spot if health remained a constant. It turns out, health wasn’t the only thing working against the Bulls.
Jim Boylen wasn’t cut out for this gig, but the problem went even further above than their former head coach. Chicago decided to part ways with Gar Forman and John Paxson, going with Arturas Karnisovas as their Vice President who would make basketball decisions going forward.
Karnisovas then hired a new general manager: Marc Eversley, formerly of the Philadelphia 76ers. Collectively, they moved quickly on Billy Donovan when he became available. Now, the three of them look to turn things around in a hurry.
Recently, Eversley told Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic that he thinks this team is much better than what they advertised throughout last season. In his interview with Mayberry, Eversley gave us a pretty telling description of how he sees the team looking in the immediate future.
"“We’ve talked a lot about ‘This is not a rebuild.’ We’re looking to retool this thing, and we think Billy is going to put us in a position to do that in the foreseeable future. So, yeah, there’s a little bit of pressure in terms of responsibility of getting this franchise back to relevance. But we embrace that.”"
The words “this is not a rebuild” are strong ones, especially considering how putrid the Bulls have been over the last couple of years. But, Eversley may see what some fans have seen in this team, and that’s the idea that they’re not too far off from competing.
The next step is for the trio to figure out which players they see as the key cornerstones to competing, though. If this is going to be a retool, that must mean some sort of deals are coming, right?
The Bulls aren’t going to find a superstar at the no. 4 overall pick in a draft like this year’s. That one player isn’t going to put them over the top. But, if they were to deal their pick along with a player or two, who says they couldn’t land that particular piece that could see them break through?
Free agency also won’t see a huge splash this year, but who knows what Eversley and Karnisovas have up their sleeves. It’s easy to see a core including Coby White, Zach LaVine, Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. as an attractive one for am impending free agent.
If the Bulls could somehow move a guy like Otto Porter Jr. along with their pick, maybe they would find another piece to their puzzle. Only time will tell, but the words from Eversley make it seem like we should expect some moves from the Bulls as early as this offseason — they are not waiting until next year.
