Chicago Bears: 3 under-the-radar replacements for Tarik Cohen
By Ryan Heckman
3. Mike Weber, Free Agent
Going back to that 2019 NFL Draft once more, the Dallas Cowboys drafted former Ohio State standout running back Mike Weber in the seventh round. At one point, we wondered here if the Bears should have taken a shot on him late in that draft as well.
Coming out of college, Weber had a lot to like about him as a well-rounded back who had experience playing strong football at a top-tier program like Ohio State. Weber rushed for 2,676 yards in three seasons while averaging 5.9 yards per carry. He also caught 54 passes over that time period, which is something the Bears are going to be looking for now without Cohen’s pass catching abilities.
Weber never quite got a shot in the NFL as he spent the 2019 season on the Cowboys’ practice squad, but was never elevated to the active roster. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad in January, but was waived after the Chiefs added more backs to the fold during the offseason.
Still just 23 years old and possessing a dual-threat capability, Weber would at least be worth a workout. If the Bears went the in-house route by elevating Artavis Pierce from their own practice squad, Weber would at least be worth bringing on in Pierce’s place, and maybe eventually getting a shot to contribute on a few snaps during the regular season.
