Chicago Bears: Still plenty of reason to be excited for week one
The Chicago Bears are going into the 2020 season with mixed expectations.
The Chicago Bears went into the 2019 season with Super Bowl expectations. Most of us believed that they would be right there with the best teams in the NFC competing for the chance to play for the Lombardi Trophy. Well, the season didn’t go as planned and they went 8-8 and missed the playoffs. 8-8 isn’t good but it isn’t the worst but it felt like they went 2-14 based on the hype surrounding them. There is no hyper surrounding them at all this year but fans still have a few reasons to be excited about this team.
1. Football is back
2020 has been a tough year. We have dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the lives of so many and there have been so many social justice issues that we are all trying to be better at fixing. Sports are able to help us come together in tough times and not many sports galvanize people like football. The Bears are so loved in Chicago and this is a chance to bring the city together as one of the cities that has suffered the most this year.
2. If it doesn’t work, there will be lots of change
Mitchell Trubisky was named to be the starter in week one against the Detroit Lions. He has beaten out Nick Foles in camp to have the right to start the season as the starting quarterback. His leash is going to be short and they will more than likely go to Foles at the first sign of trouble. If Mitch doesn’t work out this year, he simply won’t be back next year.
If he is bad enough that they cut bait with him after this year, that will mean that the team is probably pretty bad because chances are Foles won’t be much better. If that happens, there is an even better chance that one of (if not both) Matt Nagy or Ryan Pace will be gone. This team makes us feel good about them time and time again and they continue to disappoint. Well, now you can be excited to know that if this fails, they will make big changes and start all over.
3. The Defense
This team’s defense is awesome. They have studs at every position and can make big plays at the big times of the game. The offense wasn’t able to support them enough in 2019 and it showed. The unit was often out there without being able to recover from the drive before. The offense might be marginally better this year so hopefully, they are able to get back to that “best defense in the NFL) level.
Conclusion:
The Chicago Bears are a team that nobody knows what to expect from. They could either be really good or they could be really bad. There are “experts” who believe they will be good enough for the postseason and there are some who think that they could be in the conversation to draft Trevor Lawrence from the University of Clemson. No matter, what, football is so close to being back that we can almost touch it. Hopefully, they are able to have a good year and surprise us all.
