Chicago Bears: 4 recently-cut players to consider signing
By Ryan Heckman
2. WR Hakeem Butler
It boggles many minds as to why the Arizona Cardinals cut second-year wideout Hakeem Butler. Last season, as a rookie, Butler missed the entire season due to injury. He never really had a chance at showing the team what he could do.
Of course, they added DeAndre Hopkins and already have Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk. The Cardinals liked some of their other younger guys behind those three as well. But, to cut a 6-foot-6 monster like Butler before he had a chance to blossom seems incredibly odd.
At Iowa State, Butler’s final season in 2018 was ridiculous. He caught 60 passes for 1,318 yards and nine touchdowns — for those counting at home, that’s a 22.0 yards per reception average.
The Bears are pretty well set at wide receiver, with Javon Wims rounding out the depth chart. But, adding an athletic freak like Butler to the practice squad would be a major victory. He’d have time to learn the offense and, if called upon, would provide a very intriguing target for the Bears’ quarterbacks.
