Chicago Blackhawks: Three reasons to fire Stan Bowman right now
The Draft
The Draft hasn’t been all that good for Stan Bowman in the first round. As we saw earlier in the past decade, the draft is huge for teams looking to build championship contenders. Chicago was very good at it at one point but have since fallen off. A lot of it has to do with Stan Bowman and his inability to pick a guy that is going to play well and keep the guys who do play well. He loves trading away the guys he selects for some reason and it is a problem.
In 2010, he drafted Kevin Hayes which was his first-ever draft choice as the GM of this team. He never signed with Chicago after playing four years at Boston College. Bowman couldn’t get him signed and he signed a contract with the New York Rangers when he became a college free agent. That was a tale of what’s to come for his drafting/signing/developing skills.
Since then, the last three first-round picks of Kirby Dach (2019), Nicolas Beaudin (2019), and Adam Boqvist (2018) are the only ones that are still left with the organization. All of the rest of them were either traded after being selected or the first-round pick was traded outright. Players like Nick Schmaltz, Teuvo Teravainen, Henri Jokiharju, and Phillip Danault amongst others are all gone. A lot of them went on to become great players with other organizations.
At this time, we can only hope that the ones that are left are able to make big impacts on this team going forward. It is probably fair to hope that Stan Bowman isn’t the guy at the podium when the Blackhawks come up to make the 17th pick in the 2020 NHL Draft but you never know at this point.
