player. 9. . SP. Chicago Cubs. Alec Mills. 30

Alec Mills has been one of the surprises for the Chicago Cubs this season. He became the fifth starter when Quintana went down with his dishwashing incident. He took the opportunity and has been mostly good. He is 3-2 so he has given the Cubs a chance to win but his numbers aren’t as good as you would think they are. He has a -0.4 WAR, 5.23 ERA, and a 1.163 WHIP. This is a guy who the Cubs probably want to move on from before he loses even more value.

All of his appearances this season have been starts but that is because of the Quintana injury. He probably would have been a reliever had that not happened. If he was traded to another team, it is fair to wonder if he would be a starter or a reliever. A team that has a nice rotation but needs bullpen help might be willing to take on Mills. There might even be a team that sees him as their fifth starter so they give the Cubs something for him.

He isn’t a lock to be moved but it is definitely something that the Cubs should consider. They need help in so many areas on the field so moving one of their three mediocre starters might be able to help them add a closer or a bat to their lineup. Mills isn’t the guy who is going to get it done for them in the long-term so they might as wells see what’s out there.
