Chicago Bears: Five concerns about QB competition
By Usayd Koshul
1. The Bears approach
The Bears approach this offseason has been to alternate both Foles and Trubisky with the starters. What this does is allow for each quarterback to get equal playing time with starters on offense. However, there’s also a slight issue with this approach. Inconsistency.
For an offense that was inconsistent, mainly due to the quarterback position in 2019, alternating between Trubisky and Foles potentially means that no real rhythm is established on offense. This is a crucial factor to consider, especially since the first half of the 2020 offseason was virtual.
An even playing field may is certainly encouraged but at some point, head coach Matt Nagy and his coaching staff are going to need to pick a starter. The starter has to be picked sooner rather than later in an effort to begin preparing the offense for the Bears September 13th matchup against the Detroit Lions.
Overall, this approach of alternating between Trubisky and Foles, whether or not it pays off is something that will have to be seen in the regular season. As much as the Bears hope it will pay off, there’s also a chance that it doesn’t pay off, something which would hold the offense back significantly.
