3. Free agents come cheap at this point

With just under three weeks until the start of the season, Chicago could easily go and get a veteran running back at an extreme discount. There are still plenty of guys available, and many whom played last season.

Of course, the biggest name in this pool is former Pro Bowl back Devonta Freeman who had spent his entire career with the Atlanta Falcons up to this offseason. Freeman would be quite the signing at this stage, should he prove to be fully healthy.

There was a point in time where Freeman reportedly shot down an offer to be a backup earlier in the year, but this late in the game, you have to believe he’s ready for a job no matter what his role would be.

Think about Freeman touching the ball potentially 12-15 times per game while Montgomery is out — should he miss regular season time. With Cohen and Patterson sprinkled in at a solid 5-10 touches per game, that’s a full workload from the team’s running backs.

Even if it’s not Freeman, signing a veteran simply out of caution would be wise. And again, it would not be an expensive venture. Maybe they look at a former Chief, Spencer Ware, who is familiar with Nagy? No matter who they choose from the top names available, the Bears would do right by bringing in another capable back.
