Chicago Bears: 3 free agent RBs to fill in for David Montgomery
By Adam Rosen
Devonta Freeman
Freeman is just 28 years old, and while he hasn’t been nearly as productive in recent years, he still has the capacity to provide some big plays for a Chicago Bears offense that still seems to lack explosiveness.
Devonta Freeman was elected to the Pro Bowl in 2016, when he helped the Atlanta Falcons become the best offense in the NFL, as their offense got all the way to that ill-fated Super Bowl vs. New England.
Since then, Freeman hasn’t been the same. However, he’s still a solid running back with a hybrid style of play. Freeman has caught over 250 passes in his career and has over 900 rushing attempts as well. Freeman’s ability to catch passes out of the backfield is one that the Bears were looking for when they drafted Montgomery. So he’d fit right in most likely.
His total yards from scrimmage in his career is about 6,000. The potential value he can provide as a pass-catcher and two or even three-down back is high.
The issue would be his price tag. Freeman is likely the best player of the three options mentioned. Luckily Freeman will want a short term, prove-it type of deal, but sometimes, that can be a lot of money. If they could get him for a low price, then he could be worth it.
