The Chicago Bears’ lack depth at running back, and with David Montgomery injuring his groin, there are a few free agents that could potentially fill in if necessary.

During a practice at Halas Hall on Wednesday, August 26th, Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery received a handoff from Mitchell Trubisky and slipped. Clearly in pain, the second-year halfback out of Iowa State had to be carted off the practice field.

Montgomery was limping as he got up but seemed unable to put any weight on his left leg. According to ABC7 Chicago, the running back was diagnosed with a strained groin.

Coach Matt Nagy said the team does not yet know the severity of the injury. Nagy also stated that the team will work to the strengths of Tarik Cohen, Cordarrelle Patterson, Ryan Nall and Artavis Pierce as they await the full diagnosis and severity of the injury.

Montgomery, who had 889 rushing yards on 242 carries last season, was looking to build off his rookie campaign, and prove to be a force at running back, a position in which the Bears have lacked true consistency at since Matt Forte‘s departure a few years ago.

The Bears have some depth at the position, and it will remain to be seen what the length of absence Montgomery might face. However, if the injury proves to cause a long-term absence for Montgomery, there are a plethora of free agents who could provide stability at the running back position.
