Potential coach #2: Brett Brown

After an unceremonious exit from the NBA Playoffs and the bubble last week, the Philadelphia 76ers fired head coach Brett Brown. They were swept out of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics in the first round, and the team had seen enough from Brown.

The 76ers were considered a championship contender by some when this season restarted, but things gradually went downhill. Brown does deserve some credit for taking the 76ers from the worst team in the NBA to three consecutive playoff appearances in seven seasons as coach.

It wasn’t enough as the results weren’t there in the end. Brown couldn’t seem to figure out how to adapt his offense to help young stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons fit into the three-point heavy style of today’s NBA.

Brown toyed with moving Simmons from point guard to power forward during the NBA restart, but he was injured in the seeding games and forced to have surgery on his knee. With Simmons gone, the 76ers had little chance at a deep playoff run.

Brown hasn’t been linked to the Bulls in any reports as a potential candidate. But it’s worth noting the team may have interest in him just because of his experience with Philly’s long-term rebuild known as “The Process”.

It could be tempting, but to me, there are much better candidates out there. Brown may have a ceiling of success as head coach, and there are some younger candidates out there who also have credibility with player development.
