Chicago Bulls 2020 NBA Mock Draft 2.0: Post-lottery edition
Hawks select F/C Onyeka Okongwu, USC
Holy Moses, if the Bulls’ needs were different…
Onyeka Okongwu is one of my favorite players in this draft. He plays a traditional center role at only 6-9 but plays great defense and jumps out of the gym.
Coming in, Okongwu would most likely serve as a backup four or five rim-runner for the Hawks while he tries to develop a working man’s jumper, a process in which he is further than James Wiseman.
The thing about this pick that makes me just smile is the thought of a future frontcourt of Okongwu and John Collins.
Oh yeah, and Cam Redish if he pans out.
With Trae Young scoring and passing the way he does running the point, Atlanta could soon smell of Lob City 2.0.
Okongwu has post scoring down to a science, as shown by his 16 points per game on nearly 62 percent from the field last year. He is a solid rebounder (8.6 per game) with defensive capabilities (1.2 steals) that outmatch any prospect in the top five and shot 72 percent from the charity stripe on over five attempts per game.
(Chef’s kiss.)
The former Trojan can use his agility to fiercely defend the paint (2.7 blocks) while being able to switch out on the perimeter and guard wings and bigger twos.
If the Bulls had stayed at seven or even dropped back in the lottery, I would be screaming for them to take this guy. Okongwu isn’t built to be able to switch to the wing, unlike Toppin, thus why this pick is what it is.
The Hawks badly need help in the front court and it would be a blessing for them if the USC big man falls this far.
