Chicago Bears: 3 positions ready for COVID-19 impact
By Ryan Heckman
3. Quarterback? Quarterback.
Before anyone jumps to conclusions, let me explain myself. Let’s ask the question: Where do Bears quarterbacks rank in terms of NFL starting quarterbacks?
Your answer is likely going to land between 25 and 32, which is obviously poor. Now, let’s phrase another question:
Where do the Bears quarterbacks rank in terms of NFL backup quarterbacks?
This is a much different answer. The impact of COVID-19 could force teams into having to play their backup quarterbacks in 2020. In the Bears’ case, they will have one of the league’s best backup quarterbacks regardless of whether it’s Nick Foles or Mitchell Trubisky.
Are they strong starters? Absolutely not. Would teams be happy with either one as their backup, though? That’s a completely different conversation.
Both of these guys have plenty of experience starting over their careers. They aren’t going to be reasons you win football games on a regular basis. However, if called upon in a time of need, they can get the job done without completely losing you football games — most of the time.
Let’s put it this way. If Tom Brady goes down, Tampa Bay has to turn to Blaine Gabbert. Would they rather have the option of turning to Foles or Trubisky? How about the Steelers having to throw in Mason Rudolph again due to a Ben Roethlisberger injury?
You get the point. Believe it or not, in this uncertain and unprecedented season, the Bears are actually set up very well at the quarterback position. It’s all about perspective.
