2. The Packers drafted for the future

The Packers’ biggest move of the offseason was trading up in the 2020 NFL Draft for quarterback Jordan Love. Even with Aaron Rodgers under contract until 2023, the Love era will arrive quicker than most expect. It’s a trend that exists in the NFL today. Whenever a team drafts a quarterback in the first round, the quarterback needs to eventually see the field.

Besides Love, Green Bay used two draft picks on running back A.J. Dillion and tight end Josiah Deguara, with the hope that both will become critical parts of head coach Matt LaFleur’s offense. Three draft picks were spent addressing the offensive line, clearly showing that it’s time to build for the future for a unit that’s been anchored by names like David Bakhtiari over the last few years.

As long as Rodgers is starting, regardless of the talent that’s around him, he’ll continue to make the Packers effective. However, right now, the strength of the Packers isn’t offense, it’s defense, with defensive coordinator Mike Pettine returning for a third straight year, with a unit that’s mostly been with him since 2018.
