The Chicago Bears might get immediate production out of their 5th round pick.

As we sit within two weeks of the (tentative) official start of training camp, Chicago Bears fans are certainly looking forward to being able to talk about actual football-related things. For months, the discussions have been about hypotheticals or arguments over which quarterback will win the competition that hasn’t begun.

However, in two weeks we’ll begin to get some answers to these questions. Another thing we’ll get to see, and should be looking forward to, is getting our first look at the team’s rookie class.

One of those rookies I am most excited to see is fifth-round pick Trevis Gipson, out of the University of Tulsa.

Gipson could be the latest late-round pick of general manager Ryan Pace to make an immediate contribution In their rookie year, the most recent being 2018 fifth-round pick Bilal Nichols.

At 6-foot-3, 261 pounds, Gipson has the prototypical size to play the edge rusher position. He’s insanely athletic if not still a bit raw at the position.

The great news for Gipson, and for Bears fans, is he’ll have the opportunity to learn for two incredible pass rushers and professionals in Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn.

No doubt they will help turn his raw talent into a refined pass-rushing skill set. Moreover, the prospect of a guy like Gipson rotating in after the offensive line has been beaten down by Mack, and Quinn is a potentially fruitful one.

Imagine, if you will, an offensive line getting pounded by two of the games best, only to have to deal with a guy like Gipson who is so quick off the line and fast to the quarterback.

At a minimum, you can reasonably expect Gipson to replicate the production of another recent Bears’ rotational edge rusher, Aaron Lynch.

In his first season with the Bears, Lynch recorded three sacks, followed by two more last season. Matching Gipson up in situational pass-rushing opportunities should allow Gipson to put up decent numbers, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him record a few sacks next season.

Gipson may end up being the steal of the draft for the Bears and it’ll be really exciting to see if he can make an immediate impact his his first season
