Mistake No. 1

Oh, look, it’s another team which is infamously connected to the Bears and their 2017 draft debacle. The San Francisco 49ers were notorious for apparently “fleecing” the Bears in that trade where Chicago moved up to no. 2 to get Trubisky.

Let us not forget that the 49ers decided to draft defensive end Solomon Thomas with that number three pick. Coming out of Stanford, Thomas was supposed to be the next-best pass rusher in the draft following Myles Garrett.

When a team drafts a pass rusher in the top three overall, typically you would expect them to pan out as an upper echelon type of player. Just look at recent examples like Joey Bosa (40.0 sacks in four seasons) and Nick Bosa (9.0 sacks as a rookie last year), who were both drafted in the top three.

In three seasons with the 49ers, Thomas has racked up a total of 6.0 sacks — that’s it. The most embarrassing part is, his best season came as a rookie where he registered 3.0 sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

But, a top-three pick? You’re kidding yourself if you think Trubisky was a worse mistake than Thomas. Imagine Mahomes in San Francisco with that defensive front — they may have even won two Super Bowls in a row by now.
