Chicago Bears: Predictions for three key training camp battles
Gipson seems to be a lock at strong safety for the Chicago Bears
Last year’s strong safety, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is gone, signing an offseason deal with the Dallas Cowboys, and so start free safety Eddie Jackson will have his third different running mate in as many years, after playing alongside Adrian Amos his rookie year.
For a long time, many thought the Bears would roll with veteran Deon Bush who has filled in admirably at various times in his career. However, this offseason the team signed a couple of free agents.
First, it was Jordan Lucas who is likely a longshot to even make the team. However, their second signing, Tashaun Gipson, was a lowkey home run addition. The Houston Texans cut Gipson just one year into a $22.5 million deal but thought highly enough of him to give him such a deal. However, they decided to clear some cap space by cutting the former Pro Bowler who ended the season on injured reserve.
Before he did, however, he recorded three interceptions and eight pass breakups over fourteen games.
While Bush may have the advantage of being familiar with the defense, that advantage will dissipate quickly and Gipson will easily win this battle.
