The New England Patriots make the Chicago Bears look horrible
The Chicago Bears are completely incompetent when it comes to the quarterback position and the New England Patriots continue to make it look worse.
The Chicago Bears are an awful franchise when it comes to a lot of things but they are most awful at making sure they are set at the most important position in all of sports. The quarterback of an NFL team is truly important and they continue to fail at that spot. They don’t draft the position well, trade for the position well, and they certainly don’t sign the position well. It has been a complete mess for almost every year of their existence.
There is a team that Bostonian’s root for called the New England Patriots. They have had Tom Brady under center for the better part of the past two decades. Well, this is going to be the first year that they were going to line up in week 1 without him in the mix since he made his NFL debut. He is a Tampa Bay Buccaneers player now so they needed to move on.
It looked like they were going to use Jarrett Stidham as their quarterback but some breaking news on Sunday night made things appear a bit different. Free-agent quarterback Cam Newton is going to be a New England Patriots quarterback starting next year. He is going there on a one year deal worth $7.5 million. It is the definition of a “prove it” deal for Newton. He dealt with a big injury in 2019 and COVID-19 combined with that has made his free agency a nightmare.
It is reported that Newton is going to still have to compete with Stidham for the starting job. That feels like it is simply just the right thing to say but you almost have to assume that the former MVP is going to get the nod if he is healthy. It is certainly going to be interesting to see how they manage this going forward.
This should, however, make things very upsetting for Bears fans. The Patriots had Tom Brady for two decades and he followed Drew Bledsoe who was a pretty good player. They make everyone look dumb most of the time but the Bears especially. The Patriots then are faced with life after Tom Brady which seemed tough but they waited it out and are adding an MVP. Newton might not be the MVP he once was but he might still be a really good player.
Meanwhile in Chicago, they have a quarterback competition of their own. Mitchell Trubisky, who the Bears drafted over Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes, is going to go up against Nick Foles. Foles has a Super Bowl victory as a starter but he has never dominated a regular season for a team that he was given the keys to. Newton is a much more proven player than Foles, despite that one really good playoff run for Foles. The key here is health.

The Bears gave up draft capital for Foles when they could have just thrown some money at Newton but nope. We get a quarterback competition instead. Trubisky is a nice kid but if he stinks he will be gone by 2021. Meanwhile, in New England, Newton is going to a system that always gets the most out of its players. This is all so upsetting as a Chicago Bears fan.
