Offensive Line needs to play with an edge

One of if the not main reason why the offensive line was a disaster last season was that the line consistently got pushed around. Even from weaker defensive fronts, the line had a tough time moving their guy off the LOS and opening run lanes for the running backs to attack. It is why I never got too down on Nagy abandoning the run early on.

It is frustrating to watch David Montgomery run into waiting defenders at the line of scrimmage consistently. The Bears are relying heavily on new offensive line coach Juan Castillo to improve most of the same faces across the o-line.

There’s not much they address personnel-wise outside of offensive guard Germain Ifedi, offensive tackle Jason Spriggs, and a couple of late-round projects. The right guard is wide open for competition. The leading candidate is Ifedi, who coach Castillo is infatuated with size and strength.

The forgotten guys seem to be both Rashard Coward and Alex Bars. Both are developmental projects, along with draft picks Lachavious Simmons and Arlington Hambright. Ifedi should win this job with the hope that they may unlock what the Seahawks could not.

The one guy they are hoping to make a big leap is 3rd-year man James Daniels. Daniels struggled early in the year at the center but got better when switched back to left guard. With 10 pounds added to his frame, the Bears are hoping for an improved version. One that sees the young guard live up to his draft status.

If the line gets it together, it will play a huge part in the offense turning it around this upcoming season.
