Chicago Bears: 5 burning questions about the offense
By Ryan Heckman
4. How much opportunity does Cole Kmet receive as a rookie?
Generally, rookie tight ends aren’t hurried into their development. It takes a little while for most to blossom and contribute in a regular fashion. Now, there are some exceptions every once in a while — take Evan Engram of the New York Giants, for example.
The Bears’ realistic options at tight end are Jimmy Graham, Demetrius Harris, Cole Kmet and J.P. Holtz. In terms of actual playing time, these are the four I see taking most of the snaps.
Harris is the blocker of the group, and Holtz could play more of the fullback role depending on how the coaches scheme him throughout camp.
Realistically, I would hope to see Kmet in on at least 20-to-30 percent of snaps to begin with. However, that number could rise if he takes advantage and becomes a staple on third down and in the red zone.
For Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky, a great, big security blanket will be important to have. Kmet should see plenty of playing time if he can prove it early.
