Chicago Bears: 5 burning questions about the offense
By Ryan Heckman
2. Does the run game improve?
Better question: Does Matt Nagy commit to establishing the run each and every week?
Both of these questions go hand in hand, but there are also a few other factors in place. To address Nagy’s responsibility, yes, he must commit to establishing the run. There is zero excuse for at least not attempting to keep a defense guessing.
With average quarterbacks on this roster (at best), it is going to be important for Nagy to not shy away from running the football a healthy percentage.
Obviously, we just talked about how the offensive line must improve greatly this season. That’s a given.
But, there are other factors involved. How many carries does David Montgomery receive? Does Tarik Cohen revert back to his 2018 self? How often does Cordarrelle Patterson get lined up in the back field?
I will say it until I’m blue in the face: Cohen has to be more decisive this season. There should be no more hesitation or dancing around. That’s where he struggled in 2019; failing to commit to a play.
Meanwhile, Patterson is a much better running back than people might think. Though he’s mainly seen for his special teams usage, Patterson is phenomenal out of the back field and has been his entire career. He’s averaged over seven yards per carry on 103 carries throughout his time in the NFL.
The Bears have pieces in place to be a decent running football team, and that’s all they need to be. As long as Nagy commits in the first place, they should be better.
