Chicago Bears: Ranking NFC North running back groups
By Ryan Heckman
2. Green Bay Packers
As a very close second, the Green Bay Packers boast arguably the most depth at the running back position and are close in talent to the Minnesota Vikings. The only reason I have Minnesota number one is because I believe their feature back, Cook, is a better player than Aaron Jones — but that’s not by a lot.
Last year, Jones led the league in rushing touchdowns with 16 overall. That was more than even Christian McCaffrey or Lamar Jackson. To put it in perspective, Jones’ touchdown total was equal to Nick Chubb, Saquon Barkley and Devin Singletary combined.
To go along with his production on the ground, Jones also caught an impressive 49 passes for 474 yards and three scores, giving him 19 total touchdowns on the year.
Behind Jones is a more-than-capable backup Jamaal Williams, who is one of the better backups and third-down backs in football. In 2019, Williams rushed for 460 yards on 107 carries while also catching 39 passes for 253 yards and five touchdowns. In total, the Packers’ dynamic running back duo combined for 25 total scores in 2019.
To top it all off, Green Bay’s third string running back will be a 2020 second-round pick in Boston College’s A.J. Dillon, which might signal less than an ideal future for Jones or Williams. But, for now, their depth is by far better than anyone else in the division.
