Chicago Bears: Ranking NFC North running back groups
By Ryan Heckman
Where exactly do the Chicago Bears rank amongst the NFC North in running back talent?
Last year, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace notoriously moved up in the draft, as he does many times, and secured what he thought was his future starting running back in David Montgomery. After an up-and-down rookie year, Montgomery’s future can only get brighter, right?
Let’s hope so, because the rest of the NFC North is jam-packed with talent at the running back position. If the Bears aren’t careful, they’ll become more of an overshadowed afterthought in back field competition.
It’s not all gloom and doom, though, because Montgomery is a talented kid who makes a living by earning those yards the hard way. He’s one of the more elusive backs in football and breaks tackles better than most of his peers. Is his talent, alone, enough to land him high up on our NFC North running back rankings, though?
There is some stiff competition at running back in the black and blue division. The Bears are looking at some of the best duos in all of football, and having to play them twice a year, each.
The Packers’ Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams will continue to be a problem, especially given the fact that Aaron Rodgers‘ didn’t get his wish with a rookie receiver this offseason. Expect more and more running from Green Bay.
The Lions added a high-potential rookie next to Kerryon Johnson, in D’Andre Swift.
Meanwhile, the every-down danger of Dalvin Cook remains in Minnesota, with a phenomenal compliment in Alexander Mattison.
Where do the Bears rank amongst one of the better divisions in football when it comes to running back talent? Let’s get down to business ranking all four groups.
