3. Addressing offensive line too late in draft

Free agency didn’t see the Bears add a player of strong note up front. You could try and count Germain Ifedi, who started for the Seattle Seahawks the last few seasons. But, he’s a penalty monster and mostly known as a disappointment. We’ll see how he pans out in Chicago.

In this year’s draft, most fans were all but certain that Pace would take an offensive lineman sooner than they did. Making two trades in the fifth round, the odds were good that Pace was going to take an offensive lineman with one of those picks. Sure enough, though, he did not.

In the seventh round, the Bears finally addressed the offensive line when they took Arlington Hambright and Lachavious Simmons, two projects who might not even make the final roster. If either one of them stick around, I’ll consider that a major win, especially knowing that they hardly had pre-draft grades going into the process.

As I said earlier, the Bears would have had their chance to draft a strong player in the fourth round had they not traded their compensatory pick. Heck, in Round 6 we saw a pair of Michigan offensive linemen get drafted in Jon Runyan and Michael Onwenu. I would have been thrilled with either one.

The one glaring weakness of this team remains up front on the offensive line. Unless we see an unlikely candidate step up and blow us all away, this will be the Bears’ achilles heel in 2020.
