Chicago Cubs: Three players who could be a DH

The Chicago Cubs have two men who are capable of playing centerfield. Obviously, if Schwarber is the designated hitter on most days, one of them can play left field as well. The two mentioned are Ian Happ and Albert Almora Jr. Well,  Happ is the one more capable of playing other positions. He was also a much more productive hitter in 2019 than Almora. If there are ever days where they need a DH in the pinch, Happ might be someone who is able to do that.

Almora didn’t have a good year in 2019 at all. He actually had a negative WAR. According to the statistic, a replacement-level player could have played in his spot and the Cubs would have had a better chance to win the game. That probably won’t be the case this year as he should probably play at least a little bit better. With that said, Happ is still the better option as the designated hitter for the Cubs.

Happ had a WAR of 1.0 which isn’t terrible for only playing in 58 games. He had 11 home runs and 30 RBIs along with 25 runs scored in those 58 games. His slash line of .264/.333/.564 was pretty good for not really having that many reps at the MLB level compared to everyone else. He might be a guy who can slot in as a designated hitter for them once the season starts if they use a DH.

One thing to remember about this is that this is something the Cubs can use to learn something about their team. If the DH comes in this weird season, there is a good chance that it doesn’t go away. There have been rumors that it has been coming to the National League for a few years now so this could be a chance for every team to see who can fill that role within their own organizations. If there is nobody in their organization who can do it well, they can use this time to realize that and try and find a solution.
