Chicago Cubs: Three players who could be a DH
The easy answer for the Chicago Cubs at the designated hitter position is Kyle Schwarber. He is a pretty good power hitter but someone who isn’t great in the field. That is the prototype for a designated hitter in the Major Leagues. It is possible that Schwarber takes that spot and runs with it. It is also possible that he is incapable of producing as a hitter without playing in the field.
Schwarber, however, will almost certainly be a guy who is afforded the opportunity to be the DH right away. There are plenty of options to play left field for them if Schwarber makes his way to the DH position with the new rules. Schwarber is a great hitter and his production at the plate is no joke. He isn’t the league’s best contact hitter but he can absolutely crush the ball.
Power hitting will always be his game. He hit 38 home runs in 2019 and had 92 RBIs in the process. A lot of that damage came in the second half once he started to hit his groove. If he can do that for a whole season, the sky’s the limit for his potential. The question for Schwarber remains, have we seen his best? He has to go out there and prove that he can continue to improve. A spot as the designated hitter might suit him well in that quest.
