#2: Dennis Rodman’s 48-hour vacation in Vegas

It’s probably the biggest “Not possible in today’s world” moment in the series. After Scottie Pippen missed the beginning of the 1997-1998 season, the Bulls turned to forward Dennis Rodman to carry a bigger load. When Pippen returned, Rodman said he needed a vacation.

But this wasn’t just a turn of phrase from the eccentric star, he literally wanted a vacation. In the middle of the season while the Bulls were on their way to this group’s final championship. Somehow, it worked.

Jordan was summoned to the office of coach Phil Jackson, who broke the news of the request. Jordan may have been upset, but he and Jackson agreed a 48-hour break for Rodman was reasonable. In true Rodman fashion, he headed straight to Las Vegas.

With then-girlfriend Carmen Electra along for the ride, Rodman partied hard for a night in Vegas. He was spotted arriving on a motorcycle. Rodman was truly living his best life in 1998.

Rodman eventually returned to his apartment in Chicago, which was just blocks away from the United Center. He wanted to extend his vacation and stayed home with Electra for another day. That ended when Jordan himself banged on the door to get Rodman to practice.

Most Bulls fans at the time and even some reporters didn’t know about the quick getaway for Rodman. Today, his every move in public would be tracked by fans with smartphones. But for this special player and special team, they made it work.
