Chicago Bears: 4 players who should not make the roster
By Ryan Heckman
4. Outside Linebacker Barvevious Mingo
It’s a little funny that three of the four guys on this list are 2020 free agent signings, but I really don’t see a lot of value in them sticking around over some other guys. The last and final player who doesn’t belong on this roster is former no. 6 overall pick Barkevious Mingo.
In seven seasons, Mingo has played for five teams — four teams in his last four seasons. That’s not exactly how he had it planned out as a top-tier collegiate talent, I’m sure.
At outside linebacker, I think the Bears keep four: Khalil Mack, Robert Quinn, Trevis Gipson, and Ledarius Mack. The younger Mack is more of a bold prediction, but I think he offers more pass rushing prowess than Mingo.
In 110 games since his career began back in 2013, Mingo has totaled just 10 sacks. Five of those 10 sacks came in his rookie year. I will take my chances with the undrafted Mack and his fellow rookie Gipson, rather than banking on a journeyman and former first-round bust.
I understand that Mingo offers a little help on special teams, but if you’re really good at your job, you don’t play for five teams in five years, no matter what area you specialize in. The Bears have plenty of pass rush between Mack and Quinn starting, and should be just fine without Mingo on special teams.
