Chicago Bears: 4 players who should not make the roster
By Ryan Heckman
1. Safety Jordan Lucas
One of the lesser-mentioned signings this offseason is safety Jordan Lucas, who came over from the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bears had a major need at safety, next to Eddie Jackson, but Lucas wasn’t going to fill it. He was likely always a backup plan.

Recently, the Bears signed free agent Tashaun Gipson to come in and start next to Jackson, therefore Lucas will be relegated to a bench role — or will he? Personally, I don’t know if it makes sense to keep him around past training camp.
I understand that a prior tie to Matt Nagy counts as something. Lucas played for the Chiefs immediately after Nagy left for Chicago, so I’m sure there were conversations between Nagy and his connections in Kansas City prior to signing Lucas.
But, the fact is, the Bears have a good thing going in their secondary, specifically at safety. Bringing both Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson back were great decisions.
These guys know the scheme. They know their teammates. There is a reason they were re-signed instead of going elsewhere. I absolutely love the depth that Bush brings to the safety group, being able to plug in for either starter if need be. Houston-Carson is a valuable special teams player at times, too.
At the end of the day, I think the Bears keep four safeties and Lucas isn’t one of them.
