Chicago Cubs: Three players that COVID might force them to trade
The Chicago Cubs have a very good catcher in Willson Contreras. He is one of the better catchers in the National League but he is going to be needing a significant pay upgrade over the next few years. If they offered him an extension and he didn’t take it, he might regret that down the line. Obviously, he didn’t know a global pandemic was going to take over the world the way that it has but here we are. Now, that money might never come back.
The Cubs have seen Contreras continue to grow behind the plate as a catcher and at the plate as a hitter throughout his career. He has the experience of being a World Series champion which might make a team more willing to take him. He has also been a National League all-star catcher twice which isn’t easy for his position. That goes to show how good of a player he has been during his time with the Cubs.
The lack of financial income right now might cause Contreras to have to take a haircut on his next contract. This is disappointing for him I’m sure, but the Cubs still might have to move him in order to shed some payroll. If they are able to lose one or both of the previously mentioned players than he might be able to stay if he takes a discount but there is no doubt that the Cubs will have to do something to shed some payroll.
