Chicago Bulls: An early look at 5 free agent big men
By Ryan Heckman
2. Center Meyers Leonard, Unrestricted
This season, Meyers Leonard is in the last year of a four-year deal he signed with the Portland Trail Blazers, but played this final season with the Miami Heat. His salary was just over $11 million, and if the Bulls want to find their next Luke Kornet type of player, only better, Leonard is a solid option.
He has never been more than simply a good role player, but Leonard is the kind of guy the Bulls would be able to use off the bench. He’s a great three-point shooter for a big man, shooting it at a minimum of 42 percent over his last three seasons. For his career, Leonard averages over 39 percent from deep.
This most recent season, Leonard started 49 games. That’s the only thing that might hurt the Bulls’ chances of bringing him in as a reserve, but Leonard didn’t exactly play out of his mind as a starter, either.
In over 20 minutes played per game, Leonard only averaged six points and five rebounds per contest. On a per-36-minute basis, those numbers look a little better as he nearly averaged a double-double.
If Leonard is looking for starter’s money, I’m not so sure he’ll get it, at least not from the Bulls. But, on a similar contract to the one he recently signed, he might be a decent option.
