Chicago Bears: An early look at potential surprise roster cuts
By Ryan Heckman
5. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky
I know this is extremely bold, but hear me out. Let’s say that Nick Foles cements himself as the guy during camp and it’s blatantly obvious. The Bears already washed their hands of any commitment to Mitchell Trubisky when they opted not to pick up his fifth year option a few days ago.
If Foles completely owns the competition and wins it outright, the Bears very well could move on from Trubisky by cutting him and signing a veteran to back up Foles. Why not take a shot on a guy like Cam Newton, who is still out there?
The Bears could play this season with Foles as the starter and allow Cam to be completely healthy and ready to take over if need be. Also, they can finally rid themselves of the pressure of developing Trubisky.
Drafting him was a mistake, period. It would allow Trubisky to go find a new home and get a fresh start; whatever that’s worth to him. For the Bears, they would know their identity and no longer have the wasted no. 2 overall selection hovering over the franchise.
