Chicago Bears: An early look at potential surprise roster cuts
By Ryan Heckman
1. Linebacker Joel Iyiegbuniwe
The Bears’ linebacker battles will be intriguing to watch in camp this year. I like Joel Iyiegbuniwe in terms of a special teams guy, but personally, I wonder if he has what it takes to become a true replacement for Danny Trevathan or Roquan Smith if one of them goes down.
To be totally honest, I like what I have seen from Josh Woods when he has time. He has always looked like more of the ideal inside linebacker, to me.
I also wonder how many outside linebackers the Bears will end up keeping. They have Barkevious Mingo now, whom they are hoping to see enough out of as a former first-round pick to keep around for solid depth. The team drafted Trevis Gipson in the fifth round, who should have a spot, too.
The wildcard at linebacker is Ledarius Mack, who is of course the brother of Khalil Mack. It might be bold, but I think Ledarius can make this team. So, how many inside linebackers do they keep aside from the starters?
They could decide to go heavy at outside linebacker, potentially, and if they do, Iyiegbuniwe might be on his way to finding a new home.
