Gipson’s presence will directly affect…

The signing of Gipson almost certainly means he will be starting next to Eddie Jackson this coming season. Last year, Gipson started 14 games for the Houston Texans, and even though he signed with Chicago late in the offseason, he comes to the Bears to start. That’s the way most should view the situation.

With that said, Gipson will take whatever short-lived hype around Deon Bush and place it on the back burner once more. Bush has been around the organization for a few years now, and he’s improved greatly since his rookie year back in 2016. At times, he’s had to step in due to injury and has played well.

The former Hurricane will now be relegated to a reserve role again. I was on board with Bush starting and think he would have been a fine starter next to Jackson, but Gipson is more experienced and, frankly, the better player at this time.

Bush will have to wait at least another year before he truly gets his shot to start. Unfortunately for the Bears, it might not be in Chicago. Next offseason, unless Bush is guaranteed to return as a starter, I don’t think he stays in Chicago.

The positive is, Bush gets another savvy veteran to learn from as he did in both Adrian Amos and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. By the time he gets his shot as a starting safety, Bush will have a ton of knowledge and experience built up from his time spent with other starting safeties.
