Chicago Blackhawks: Three potential 2020 free agent defense adds
Tyson Barrie is a puck-moving defenseman that the Chicago Blackhawks desperately need. They need a lot of things but an older guy in that role could go a long way. They have a lot of young players that play the position coming in that need someone ahead of them in the lineup and Barrie could do that. He has been in the NHL for a while now and the 2020-21 season will be his age 29 season. He still has a lot of good years left and the Blackhawks could really use a player like him.
He spent the first eight years of his career with the Colorado Avalanche. He was traded over to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Nazem Kadri in a pretty big multi-part trade last summer. It took a long time for him to get going for Toronto this season but one major factor allowed it to happen. He wasn’t playing well under Mike Babcock but once he was fired, Barrie took off.
Barrie had five goals and 34 assists for 39 points in 70 games before the season was suspended. Those are pretty good numbers but we know he can be even better. He would thrive offensively in Chicago if the Blackhawks continued to play their high volume offense going forward. It might not be the proper way to win the Stanley Cup but they certainly could win some regular-season games and make it to the playoffs if they added a talent like Barrie to the back end.
