San Francisco 49ers

If Mitch Trubisky was signed by the San Francisco 49ers, it would be to back up Jimmy Garoppolo. They’ve paid Garoppolo too much money to do anything but start him. Plus, Garoppolo has done nothing but win in a 49ers jersey.

The reason why I could see Trubisky end up in San Francisco is because of Kyle Shanahan. Before the 2017 NFL, there were rumors of Shanahan wanting Trubisky with their pick in the 2017 draft. Of course, the 49ers passed on Trubisky when Chicago moved up one spot to select Trubisky.

Still, Trubisky is a west coast style quarterback who would thrive in Shanahan’s system. If you look at the weapons the 49ers have, Trubisky would do well if Garoppolo got hurt or in a game late in the season where they benched their starters.

Both quarterbacks are very similar, which is why I could see the 49ers taking a chance on Trubisky.

This would be the same situation the L.A. Raiders were in when they signed Marcus Mariota during the offseason. Mariota is similar to Derek Carr, as Trubisky is similar to Garoppolo.

A backup role for Trubisky would take the pressure off of him, as he gets a chance to re-learn the game from a different perspective. I don’t see him backing up a quarterback for long, as he’d most likely get a second chance somewhere else.

There’s just no telling where that second chance would be if Chicago does let him go.
