Chicago Bears: 6 QBs to watch for in the 2021 NFL Draft
KJ Costello
Speaking of working with quarterback gurus, former Stanford signal-caller KJ Costello is someone else that is worth paying attention to this upcoming season. From 2016-2019 Costello worked with David Shaw who has also worked with his fair share of quarterbacks. Costello, unfortunately, missed a lot of this past season with a thumb injury, which was likely a major factor in his decision to return to college for another season rather than entering the NFL Draft.
However, Costello is not going back to Stanford, choosing instead to transfer to Mississippi State University where he will work with another QB expert in the “Mad Scientist,” Mike Leach. Here he will look to improve upon his 2018 campaign in which he completed 65 percent of his passes while attempting 8.6 yards per pass.
Costello has really good size at 6-foot-5, 222 pounds, with above-average arm strength. However, one of his greatest strengths is his ability to be decisive and accurate once he makes up his mind where he is going with the ball.
He still must get better at reading defenses, but the good news is he should get plenty of opportunities at doing just that in Leach’s air-raid system, where he will see a variety of coverages with the number of passing attempts he will get. He’s another to watch develop this fall.
