Chicago Bears: Free agent targets to address needs after NFL Draft
By Ryan Heckman
5. Guard Ron Leary
This offseason, the Bears brass have said how they want to get back to running the football. This team needs to do a better job, all around, when it comes to the ground game. Part of that has to do with the line, the other part has to do with cohesiveness amongst backs and the coaching decisions.
Hopefully, in 2020, Matt Nagy is more consistent in his play-calling and gets a better year out of his guys up front. It has to be a collective effort.
What better type of guy to bring in and compete for a job than someone who was part of one fo the best offensive lines in football just a few years ago with the Dallas Cowboys?
Ron Leary was part of the Cowboys line which saw Ezekiel Elliott rush for over 1,600 yards as a rookie back in 2016, and has since then been with the Denver Broncos.
The veteran is a mauler in the run game and would add needed competition to that area in Chicago. He’s likely towards the tail end of his career, but would make sense with the Bears since Pace has been adding veteran guys in hopes of a Super Bowl run.
Right now, Leary would come in and compete with someone like Germain Ifedi and maybe seventh-round pick Arlington Hambright at the guard position.
