Chicago Bears: Free agent targets to address needs after NFL Draft
By Ryan Heckman
3. Running Back Devonta Freeman
One position I was almost certain the Bears would draft is at running back. Obviously, David Montgomery is the starter. But, behind him, they don’t have that second, consistent runner. Tarik Cohen is still around, although most of his value comes on special teams now, as he hasn’t been very effective on offense recently.

This draft, like all drafts, was loaded with plenty of running backs who would have fit well next to Montgomery. But, we know how it ended. Pace did his thing and running back is still a need.
The Bears have stated they want to use Cordarrelle Patterson more in the back field, and I agree he is a weapon they should unleash more. But, I also believe a true running back to share time with Montgomery would serve the offense well.
Devonta Freeman is still only 28 years old, believe it or not. I firmly believe he would be electric in Chicago if given the opportunity. Sure, he’d need to prove he is healthy. But, as a guy who could touch the ball 10 times per game, I think Freeman is a must-sign player at this point because of how much of a dual-threat he is.
Last year, Freeman appeared in 14 games and, despite the Falcons’ woes, still caught 59 passes on top of his rushing duties. He’s a well-rounded player and fits the mold of the type of free agents Pace is going after this year.
