Chicago Bears Draft: Why Jaylon Johnson is steal of the draft
By Ryan Heckman
2. Draft position in itself is insulting
Thanks to a couple of other teams’ interesting decisions before Johnson was selected, he looks even more like a bargain. Johnson was the seventh cornerback off the board overall. Depending on who you trust most, Johnson could have been projected to the third overall cornerback prospect in his class behind Jeff Okudah and C.J. Henderson.
Personally, I had him mocked to go in the late first round as the fourth cornerback selected. Instead, you saw decisions like the Atlanta Falcons reaching for A.J. Terrell out of Clemson with the 16th overall pick and then, the Las Vegas Raiders selected Ohio State corner Damon Arnette at no. 19 overall.
Both Terrell and Arnette should have gone lower, with Terrell projected as a second-round guy for the most part, and some having Arnette in the late second and early third.
One of the first round’s most curious picks was the Miami Dolphins taking Auburn’s Noah Igbinoghene at 30th overall — another corner who could have easily been had in the second round — later in fact.
There is no doubt in my mind Johnson should have been a first rounder — no doubt. He belonged there all along, and instead, he’ll fill a need on the league’s potential no. 1 defense.
