Chicago Bears Draft: Why Jaylon Johnson is steal of the draft
By Ryan Heckman
With the Chicago Bears’ second pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, they grabbed who could be the steal of the weekend in Jaylon Johnson.
It has been a much different look than we’re typically used to, but the 2020 NFL Draft has truly saved us all from being in such a difficult spot with our live sports. So far, three rounds have passed and we’ve seen the Chicago Bears take two immediate impact players. It’s tough to complain about that, as real as the temptation always is to over-criticize.
General manager Ryan Pace seems to have had a clear vision with his first two picks, both coming in the second round. He wanted two players who could come in right away and contribute.
With the team’s first selection at 43 overall, the Bears took Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet, who projected to be the clear-cut number one tight end in the entire draft class. Kmet joins veteran Jimmy Graham as a potential one-two punch at the position, especially in the red zone.
At no. 50 overall, the Bears very well could have traded back. But, Pace stood firm and ended up drafting who could go on to be one of the draft’s biggest steals: Cornerback Jaylon Johnson out of Utah.
Johnson joins the Bears after having played with one of the most dynamic secondaries in college football last season, so he knows what it’s like to play alongside tremendous talent. Chicago had a need at cornerback, and they were either going to draft another starter or let a group of lesser-talented players duke it out for the job.
Thankfully, Pace snagged Johnson when he did, because the Bears just got themselves a heck of a football player. In fact, Johnson was said to be a first-round talent by many experts and analysts around the sport.
Why is he going to prove to be the steal of the draft? Let’s find out.
