Chicago Bears Draft: 3 things to know about TE Cole Kmet
By Ryan Heckman
3. Cole Kmet has strong pro comps
Watching Kmet on film, I see a some traits from a couple of pro tight ends. I see a lot of both Zach Ertz and Kyle Rudolph in him.
The Ertz comparison comes because he has a knack for going up and getting the tougher throws. Kmet, like Ertz, adjusts very well to the football while in the air. Kmet and Ertz have similar speed, with Kmet being a little faster. But, they both are very intuitive when the ball is in the air, doing what comes natural to ensure the catch.
Coming out of college, Ertz was lauded for some of the improbable catches he made while at Stanford. Similarly, Rudolph makes the circus catches look routine — as does Kmet. On more than one occasion, Kmet has come up with clutch one-handed grabs, a lot like you’ve seen Rudolph do, especially last season.
Obviously, Kmet is going to get comparisons to the bigger, taller tight ends in the NFL. However, he’s a bit of a better athlete. He ran a 4.7 in his 40-yard dash, which isn’t necessarily a blazing time, but he’s much faster when he gets going.
When he does get going, he looks a lot like Ertz does, knocking people out of his way and gaining yards due to physicality rather than pure quickness. Kmet is as sure-handed as they come, and whether or not you like the pick, he comes to the Bears as the top tight end in his class. If he pans out like both Ertz and Rudolph have, the Bears will be thrilled.
