Chicago Bears Draft: A juicy, irresistible Round 2 scenario
By Ryan Heckman
As the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft gets set to kick off, the Chicago Bears might be in an irresistible position with their two picks.
The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft saw some surprises last night. There were players selected whom some experts didn’t even have as a Round 2 prospect. It couldn’t have gone more perfectly for the Chicago Bears.
General manager Ryan Pace now has a very, very interesting night ahead of him. He has the 11th and 19th picks in the second round, good for 43 and 50 overall. There is a ton of talent left on the board, and several players who could have gone in the first round.
One particular scenario I want to bring to fans’ attention: Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor is still available, and so is Penn State wide receiver KJ Hamler.
Now, before I get all of your feathers ruffled and you immediately hate this take, I understand why you might be frustrated. The Bears need a cornerback, safety and offensive lineman. I completely see that angle and agree with it.
However, Pace might have the opportunity to add two game-breaking talents on offense, and that would be incredibly difficult to pass up.
Taylor is my no. 1 running back in this class and has been for months now. If he’s there at 43, you take him — period. I know David Montgomery cost the Bears last year with moving up, but there’s no better time than the present to improve at every position when the opportunity arises.
Taylor is a 225-pound running back with 4.39 speed. He’s tough to tackle, and he’s the only back in this class who bursts past the first round and has that extra gear, almost like a young Adrian Peterson. He is special. His main knocks are the amount of carries he had in college and his fumbling question marks.
First, Taylor has stayed healthy. He’s been able to handle the usage. I’m not worried about that. Second, fumbling issues are fixable, unlike a quarterback’s accuracy for example. Taylor is the pick at 43 if he’s there.
Hamler, meanwhile, gives the Bears that true speedster to stretch the field. Can you imagine an offense with Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller, Hamler, Taylor, Montgomery, along with Tarik Cohen and Cordarrelle Patterson sprinkled in?
At that point, you add an experienced, smart, veteran quarterback like Nick Foles and give him all that firepower, and your offense is a world better than it was in 2019. Sure, later in the draft, Pace will have to find some gems at other positions — or he could opt to look at free agents still available. Safety Tony Jefferson is one example of a guy they could get relatively cheap now, and would be an excellent signing.
Taylor and Hamler — wow, that’s a tantalizing thought.
It’s hard to pass up, that’s all I’m saying. Pace could have a heck of a decision in front of him tonight as pick 43 approaches, and it’ll be crucial to watch unfold.
