Round Six, Pick 200: ILB Shaquille Quarterman, Miami

Behind Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan, the Bears do not have good depth at inside linebacker. Using the draft to find another hidden gem at the position could be the best-case scenario for the Bears if Shaquille Quarterman falls to them.

Quarterman makes sense for the Bears for a few reasons. First, he’s tough and physical. This will translate well into what the Bears defense is trying to build. Second, Quarterman excels at blitzing. Defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano will value this in his defense, which consistently sent blitzes in 2019.

There are two red flags in Quarterman’s game. First is the lack of range he has. Don’t expect him to be a stud in pass coverage since he’ll get eaten up alive in these situations. Second, he’s not able to change direction with ease. This is due to his footwork and stiff hips.

Overall, his physicality is the biggest reason to like him as a backup in the Bears defense. He won’t be a game-changer but he does have what it takes to make a few plays each game when given an opportunity to see the field.
