Round Three, Pick 101: TE Brycen Hopkins, Purdue

The Bears may have spent big at the tight end position this offseason by signing Jimmy Graham in free agency but he’s 33 years old and is a short-term solution. That’s why drafting for the future and adding a player like Brycen Hopkins makes sense.

If the Bears were to trade back and acquire a third-round pick, then Hopkins would be a good fit for Matt Nagy’s offense. He’s one of the most advanced route runners amongst tight ends in the 2020 NFL Draft and brings some versatility to the position.

Hopkins will win in the NFL due to his receiving abilities. In the Bears offense, he could line up on the line of scrimmage or could be placed in the slot and be a big target in the middle of the field for quarterbacks.

With many considering 2020 to be a weak tight end class, Hopkins could very well be one of the first tight ends taken off the board. Only Cole Kmet (Notre Dame) and Adam Trautman (Dayton) seem to rank ahead of him. Regardless, when he gets to the NFL, he’ll have an impact in an offense that emphasizes tight end play.
